Stories from the Nursery

From Lisa.

Twice a month we will be featuring posts from our Co-founder, CEO, and lead designer: Lisa!  The posts will range in subject from painting tips and project tours to Q&A's and Inspiration.  Today is her first post and gives you some insight into her life...  enjoy!

Well I’m moving.  I just can’t believe it.   5 years, 5 moves, plus a major home renovation. And I’ve moved the studio—twice!  That’s it I’m crazy.  But this one, I just can’t resist this one…

Andi has asked me to start writing blog posts again, advice on color, design, painting and the like.  I agreed, but when I sit down to write, I realize I lose interest unless it’s personal…and what is more personal than making a home?

You’ve all seen my little home.  For some reason it gets a lot of press and attention.  What many of you haven’t seen is the beginning…so let’s start there, and then I’ll introduce you to my new home…

Check out all the before, after, and in between photos of my current home here.  And stay tuned for my next posts featuring my new home!

{Thailand. Photos}

No update from Lisa in my inbox this morning (although it's not quite bed time there, so one may still be coming).  What I did wake up to though was an email with eight wonderful photos attached.   Enjoy!

From what I can gather from Lisa's first email, plans changed when they arrived and they were not allowed to construct the new school as anticipated.  So instead, they are rehabbing this school.  Step 1:  Facelift with bright happy murals.

ps. Isn't that little girl adorable?

I see bright flowers, leafy greens and people working together to create beauty.

Inner artists coming out.

A blank canvas can be intimidating...

But with lots of encouragement, shapes started to take place.

Furniture was rehabbed.

And new life was brought to this school.

Hooray!

I'm sure there is still a lot going on, but what a great start?  I love the painted children peaking out through the windows.

{Thailand. 3.27}

Our first update from Lisa.  Thailand.  3.27.

So here I am in Northern Thailand, within walking distance of the Burmese border.  It is lovely - hot and incredibly humid.

It is funny.  I got so caught up in the amazing experience of flying across the Pacific completely flat out in a bed of all things.  I have only lain completely flat on a plane once before - it is a wildly different sensation.    Even in the most calm moment, one feels the motion distinctly.  And then there is the sensation of being one of the privileged few.  Really, how odd to share space on a plane with only six other passengers. It is not at all social.  We each had our own pod, room really. I only saw brief glimpses of two others and that was it - not a word spoken for the entire 16 hours except to my own attendant.  And yes, I have to admit to loving it, quite a bit actually…  But that was several days ago..

44 hours of straight travel. 40 by air and sitting in airports, and then a 4-hour bus ride, me in the back tucked in with the bags.  I share a room and a bath, and meals are communal.  There is no more wi-fi, no cell service, no soft towels of the first class lounge - no…

The young Thai women involved in the project are some of the most lovely in spirit I have ever met.  Culturally they are deeply respectful and affectionate.  I am held tightly in thanks for each small thing I do - and they skip up to me and laughingly grab my hand to hold.  These are not children. They are in their early to mid twenties.  If I try to cross a street, invariably one of them will put an arm in front of me, protecting me from any harm that may come my way.  I am actually stunned by the sweetness of it all.

I can’t speak much of the mission yet - I am still confused.  We were meant to be working on housing to the south of us. Instead, when the military decided against the build, the team headed north to a remote village in the golden triangle of Thailand, Burma and Myanmar.  Here we are working on a school. We have painted three classrooms in and out.  I am working with a team of kids from an international school in Malaysia who have volunteered to do service work while on spring break.  Each one has an artist inside - they may not know it yet, but by the time I am done with them I hope to bring them back to the innocence of a childhood when each of us believed emphatically in our own artistic ability.

And the rumbling bus is starting up—my ride back into the hills…

friday, friday.

Happy Friday...  I hope wherever you are, you are experiencing the same sweet gift of gorgeous weather that we are here in New England.  It feels more like May than March.  I hear a cold spell is on its way, but the past few days have been simply beautiful.  I wore flip flops yesterday.  I really had no choice.  My bare toes rejoiced in the sunlight after a season of being covered up.  I would have worn shorts too, but I just couldn't bring myself to break out the real summer cloths.  Plus, it's March people.  We are supposed to have a few more weeks to get into summer shape.

Lisa leaves for Thailand today.  She departs Boston and makes her first stop in Hong Kong: a 16 hour leg.  We spent the day yesterday prepping for her departure.  We had a final strategy meeting so QHP keeps on steaming ahead while she's gone, packed up samples and supplies, set up her new nook and backed up her computer.  We will be sharing details of her trip when we can over the next two weeks, and of course we will share photos of the new school and her experiences with you when she returns.

Safe Trip, Lisa!!

this is lisa on her last big trip to Tanzania with her painted lion friend

Anyone out there Hunger Games fanatics?  The boy and I bought tickets to see the movie this Sunday.  I am beyond excited.  He and I stumbled across the series by accident after tweeting for recommendations for books on tape for a long car drive. We listened to the first one in an 8 hour stretch to DC, starting it with no idea what it was about. And we were hooked.  I have to admit that when I initially saw the casting for the movie I was disappointed.  I know SO many of you disagree with me on this.  I was especially disappointed in Peeta.  And Gale.  Ah Peeta and Gale...  Anyway,  we are seeing it.  In IMax 3D no less.  And we are excited.  I am also beyond excited that the movie is our ONLY weekend plan.  I just love those weekends.  I plan on doing nothing despite the fact that we are supposed to be moving in less than two weeks.  (More on that later.)

QHP wishes you a happy, safe weekend full of color!

Happy Birthday Lisa!

Today is a special day!  It's Lisa's (lead designer for QHP and my spectacular mother) birthday!

Please take a moment and join me in wishing her a happy one.  Happy Birthday, Mom!

I hope this year brings you more happiness than you thought possible, more successes than you ever imagined, and of course adventure.

Since today is Lisa's birthday, I thought it would be a good time to announce her next great adventure.  Lisa is the quite the seasoned traveler.  Recent trips have included places like Guatemala, Tanzania, France and countless beautiful spots in our own country.  Most of them involved some level of service work (or "real work").   I alluded to her next big trip on our recent post on her time in Mexico.  And now it is time to announce that Lisa is taking to the skies once again and crossing (many) borders.  Her destination: Thailand.

Man, this is a trip of which I am jealous.  But I am happy to report that Quiet Home Paints will be accompanying her on her voyage.  The actual paints. Lisa is travelling with this organization to "build a school for a rescued community of young girls who wish to educate and be the change in the lives of the young people in a community" of "displaced Burmese refugees and distressed hill tribe people making efforts to survive prejudice, human trafficking, the sex trade and poverty."

Check out this amazing video to give you an idea of what be the change is all about.

We are proud to be donating our paints to this effort.  Lisa will be assisting with the building of the school and also the painting of it with inspiring colors and murals to promote education and change.

So, Happy Birthday Lisa.  Happy Birthday Mom!  Keep being amazing.

letters from lisa.

Oh how I love this sweet print by artist and poet Freya Eta, so much so that I am taking it with me today as I travel to see the little bundle of love below...don't we all feel this way about our little loved ones?

If you're inspired by this print, try Pond, Puddle, Bee and Perch to create a nursery for your own little nestling.

Happy Friday...I hope your weekend is as special as mine will be...Lisa

lisa's resolution

Lisa sent this to me this morning - her resolution for the year.  I think its a great one, and one that we all could work on.  When I was growing up, during teenage emotional mini-dramas, she used to tell me, "you can make it a good day, or a bad day.  it's up to you...".

I added the photos... (sorry mom!)

From Lisa:

When Andi told me that she thought I should share my resolutions today, I felt panicked.  I hadn't made any or given any real thought to it this year.  But I like the idea of resolutions, so after some careful consideration I settled on this:

Choose happiness. Short and sweet. Seemingly simple, but more difficult in act.

For me, choosing happiness means taking care of my health,

de-stressing my life,

valuing my friends,

and loving my family.

I hope you are enjoying the new year and finding ways to choose happiness in your own life.  We happen to think that color helps, too.

letters from lisa: adopt a snowman

No snow here in coastal New England, and while we love the mild weather--there is nothing more fun than getting outside to build a snowman, particularly around the holidays.  If your kids can't build their own, try this...

I found this wonderful charity, save a snowman, a few years ago.  The charity encourages you (and your little ones) to adopt and rescue orphaned snowmen around the world.  Your donation helps to support displaced children and environmental causes around the world.  It's a great way to get our own children involved in worthy causes.

Each snowman comes with a story  Meet Tango:

Hobbies:
Tango loves to perform magic tricks for his friends. He's always up for a challenge and loves snowboarding.
Like and dislikes: There isn't much that Tango doesn't like, but negative snowmen are his least favorite. He loves to play outside and challenge himself physically. He loves fruit juices and banana splits.
Special skills: Aside from his renowned talent at “glacier surfing”, Tango is a surprising ventriloquist. He can imitate all kinds of sounds!
Dreams and goals: To be adopted by an adventurous family that loves life and cares for the environment.
Orphanage  notes:
Tango is a jovial and positive snowman with a particular talent for always making the best of any situation and spreading joy. Tango is also a very good listener and his friends can always count on him to give good advice and support. Tango would be an entertaining addition to any family. He is very social and would quickly acclimate to just about any new setting.

And if you're really bored because there is no outside fun to be had...pick up some of our paint on sale and have some great family time recreating a space with your kids.  Non toxic and odor free...

Enjoy the weekend...Lisa

letters from lisa.

Happy Friday - it's time for another note from the designer.

Last night we co-hosted an open house with the jewelry store that we are lucky to share our address with.  It was wonderful to see so many faces and talk about what we do.  Thanks to all of you who stopped by.   For those of you who aren't local and interested in seeing our space, here are some shots from last night...

We spent some time putting together a Quiet Nursery display to show off our organic paints.  The crib was painted with our color splash and the custom finials are a combination of bloom and jump.

Here's another view of the studio, my favorite feature, a whole wall in chalkboard paint tinted brown.

It makes for a wonderful place to hang inspiration and let the creativity out.

Wishing you and yours a happy Friday and a wonderful holiday....
